The Penning Board 2013-10

The Penning Board Items of the Week

Movie: "Made of Honor" (2008) - Patrick Dempsey and Michelle Monaghan

A guy in love with an engaged woman tries to win her over after she asks him to be her maid of honor.

I loved this movie, especially the gorgeous scenery of Scotland! This movie is funny and sweet with a dash of jet-setting and the characters are endearing.

A fun romantic comedy! :)

Interesting News: School confiscates third-grader’s cupcakes topped with toy soldiers

In the latest incident of anti-gun hysteria to erupt in a school setting, officials at an elementary school  impounded a third-grader boy’s batch of homemade birthday cupcakes because they were adorned with green plastic figurines representing World War Two soldiers.

Do you think schools should take such extremes in protecting their children? Or was this step a bit too far?

Book: "Where Treasure Hides" by Johnnie Alexander Donley

Fantastic World War II debut from Johnnie Alexander Donley! I really enjoyed this book and its rich historical setting amid WWII's chaotic throes and the lengths the characters had to travel to protect their treasures. :)

Artist Alison Schuyler spends her time working in her family’s renowned art gallery, determined to avoid the curse that has followed the Schuyler clan from the Netherlands to America and back again. She’s certain that true love will only lead to tragedy—that is, until a chance meeting at Waterloo station brings Ian Devlin into her life.

Drawn to the bold and compassionate British Army captain, Alison begins to question her fear of love as World War II breaks out, separating the two and drawing each into their own battles. While Ian fights for freedom on the battlefield, Alison works with the Dutch Underground to find a safe haven for Jewish children and priceless pieces of art alike. But safety is a luxury war does not allow.

As time, war, and human will struggle to keep them apart, will Alison and Ian have the faith to fight for their love, or is it their fate to be separated forever?

Bible Verse: "But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respec." - 1 Peter 3: 15 (NIV)

Song: "Roam" by The B-52s (1989)

The quintessential "traveler" song! :) "Roam around the world!"

Check out the song here. (Whoa boy, their onstage fashions from 1990!)
